Sunday morning just tends to call for brunch and on one particular Sunday morning, my friend and I decided to try out Bethlehem Star Cafe. I had seen the menu before and always thought it looked tasty. When we walked inside, I realized it was a pretty classy establishment and definitely nothing a regular diner. The restaurant was decorated with warm wooden adornments and cute little lighting fixtures along the ceiling. We were seated next to the window so we got to look outside and enjoy the view of Main Street.
The menu we were given was a bit different from what I had seen online. There were plenty of tasty-looking options still, though. After much debate, I decided on the gruyere, scallions and portobello egg white omelette topped with a warm cucumber tomato relish. This also came with whole wheat toast and home fries.
When my meal was brought out, I thought it looked stunning. However, it wasn’t nearly as tasty as it looked. I found it to overall be lacking in flavor. There wasn’t enough cheese in it, I could hardly taste the scallions, there was no flavor profile in the cucumber tomato relish and the eggs weren’t even cooked well. It overall tasted flat and bland. I had to put salt and Ketchup on it so it would at least taste like something. The greens on the plate also didn’t serve a purpose other than to give the dish some color, but they just got in the way by being in the middle of the plate. The home fries were pretty good and so was the toast.
Sometimes when you really want to try out a new restaurant, it doesn’t meet your expectations. This was the case with the Bethlehem Star Cafe. Considering it was pretty pricey, too, it was just very average food for more money than it was worth. I would have been better off at a cheap diner.
