If you really think about sushi, the concept of it is delectably delightful. Each individual roll is designed to provide a perfect bite with all flavors in harmony.
I recently dined at Cherin Sushi, a BYOB restaurant in the lower east side. Although the sushi isn’t the best quality, it’s cheap and they have some amazing deals. I ordered the “diet special” when I was there – any three rolls served with miso soup or green salad for $11.95. This deal runs Monday through Thursday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday from 10:30 p.m. until midnight, and Saturday through Sunday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.
For my choice of soup or salad, I chose the salad and it was your average sushi restaurant salad. The Irna roll, the sushi surfer roll, and the Hal and Nancy roll were my picks for sushi.
Let’s begin with the Hal and Nancy roll – spicy tuna on top pf shrimp and avocado. This was my least favorite roll of the three because I thought it was too plain in taste. The Irna roll took second place. It was a roll with yellowtail, eel and avocado on top of real crabmeat. This one was my second favorite because it was creamy from the avocado and flavorful from the three types of meat. I was surprised the sushi surfer was my favorite. This roll was quite interesting because it was banana, eel and crunch on unagi sauce. I’ve never heard of banana in sushi, and this was better than expected. It was slightly sweet and creamy from the banana.
The rolls at Cherin Sushi are on the smaller side so although three rolls is a lot, it wasn’t as absurd as having three normal sized rolls. As aforementioned, the quality of the sushi is okay but you go for the cheap price and the BYOB aspect. Bring some wine, friends and an appetite, and don’t shy away from trying the sushi with banana in it – it’ll surprise you.
