While my mom and I were strolling the aisles of a Chinese market in downtown Orlando, I stumbled upon a box of dragonfruit. I’ve recently been hearing a lot about this fruit and it’s health benefits, so I’ve been wanting to try it. It’s not the kind of fruit you run into at your local Publix, so I was happy to find one. I don’t have much knowledge of how to pick out a ripe or ideal dragonfruit, so I asked one of the women who work at the grocery store. She said one box contained dragonfruit that’s pink on the inside and sweeter, and the other one had a white interior. I am a sucker for anything sweet so I picked the sweeter one.
While at the store, we asked the woman how we should cut it. She said to cut it in half, then hallow it out with a spoon. She noted that we had to make sure we didn’t hallow the skin out with the flesh of the fruit. My mom and I did this, and tried the fruit plain. It wasn’t overly flavorful, I decided to add some plain Greek yogurt to it. That helped a little, but it was still lacking some sweetness. I then put some agave nectar and granola in for extra flavor, which helped to jazz up the fruit.
Overall, the dragonfruit was good but not as good as I had hoped. Most of the dragonfruit I’ve seen pictures of has the white interior, so I think I would have been better off trying that kind instead. I’m definitely going to try the white interior dragonfruit sometime soon, and maybe mix some berries in with it to spruce it up. Stay tuned for that!
