Neiman Marcus “The Rotunda”

Pretty much every time I visit my Mormor, we go get lunch at Neiman Marcus. I know a department store may seem like an odd place to seek out for lunch, but they have some great food (Nordstroms also has a great restaurant). We went to the Neiman Marcus in Garden State Plaza, and I love the atmosphere of the restaurant. It’s simple, clean, and modern – but not too modern because it still has a friendly vibe as opposed to seeming stiff. The restaurant is set up in a rotunda (the restaurant is even referred to as The Rotunda – how fitting) and going along half of it, there is a giant window. If you are seated by the window, you have a pretty nice view while you enjoy your meal. The waitresses are always so friendly, and my Mormor has her usual waitress whose table she always requests.

Once seated, they immediately bring out a cup of consommé. Consommé is a refined soup made from chicken stock along with vegetables and egg whites, which are later strained out. It tastes delicious and if it’s chilly out like how it was when I went there for lunch the other day, it’s the perfect thing to warm you up. They also bring out popovers and a cup of strawberry butter, and the combination is absolutely delicious. I try not to eat bread when I go out to eat, but it would be a sin to say no to the popovers. They’re crunchy yet fluffy on the inside, and when you get them fresh out of the oven there is nothing better.

What’s great about the menu is they offer plenty of healthy options. Next to these foods, they have a symbol to show they are “Go Figure,” which is described as “cuisine for a healthier lifestyle.” Under the description of what’s in the dish, they have the count of calories, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, total carbohydrates, and protein. This tool is very useful for if you’re trying to live a healthier lifestyle. Unfortunately, if you’re not as health conscious or just trying to have a splurge meal, they have the calorie count for all the other foods on the menu. I ended up ordering the salmon tacos from the Go Figure options, and my Mormor got the burger without the bread and many of the other extras on it.

My salmon tacos consisted of blackened salmon filet, corn tortillas, lime cabbage salad, cilantro, jalapeños, avocado, light chipotle mayonnaise, fresh salsa, and a few pita chips. It was so delicious, I wish this restaurant were closer so I could have it more often. The pita chips seemed homemade and were salty, which I like in pita chips. The taco itself was open face – there is no way you could pick up this monster of a taco – so I dumped the salsa on top, ordered some extra jalapeños, mixed it all together, and used my fork and knife to eat it. It may have looked like a mess but it tasted great – “building flavors,” as my mother says when she mixes all of her food together. The salsa was sweet and the light chipotle mayo had a bit of a kick to it. I would really get some heat when I would unknowingly get a bite of jalapeño. I would definitely recommend this dish, nothing about it disappointed me.

My Mormor got the all-natural grilled hamburger with secret sauce. Her burger was supposed to come with caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms, Swiss cheese, and fries. She ordered it without the bun, substituted the fries for a salad, and ordered the sauce on the side. She rarely eats burgers but she will only eat them here because she said they cook the burger well and it’s a thick patty. Her burger looked great and I could tell she really enjoyed it.

Sometimes models will come upstairs to the restaurant and model clothes around the restaurant. I haven’t seen it happen that much, but when they do it I don’t appreciate it. I understand why they do it – you’re eating lunch in a clothing store and they want you to go downstairs and buy something after – but when I’m eating I like to enjoy my meal in peace. Besides that, I really have no complaints about going there. It is expensive (my meal was $17.50, the burger was $16, and the salads cost around $20) but you’re in Neiman Marcus so you can’t be all that surprised. The food is worth it though and I’ve never had a bad experience there.
