The People’s Kitchen

One of my friends, Jackie,  has recently been raving to me about how great The People’s Kitchen is. It’s a fairly new restaurant that specializes in “hipster-traditional” spins on breakfast and lunch food. With all the hype she was creating for it, I figured I needed to try it and see for myself if it’s as good as she says.

Jackie told me to order the chipotle BBQ shrimp and cheddar grits crepes. I’ve never been a fan of grits, and the thought of shrimp on top of breakfast food didn’t quite seem like my cup of tea. I like to be an adventurous eater though. I figured if she said it was good and it’s something I wouldn’t think to order, that’s what I needed to try.

I was amazed by how much I enjoyed this. I really liked the grits filling because it added substance to the dish. The shrimp were good and I loved the BBQ sauce on it. The sauce had a slight kick to it, while still maintaining it’s sweetness. The crepes were also great because they were light and fluffy. My only complaint though was that the plate was really small. The food just barely fit on it, making it hard to eat. For eating shrimp and grits crepes though, if the plate was my only complaint I consider that a success.


I really enjoyed my meal and noticed many other items I’d want to order. The prices are cheap and everything is under $10 – my meal was priced at $9 and was the most expensive thing on the menu. The service was attentive, despite how small staff was. The restaurant is also small, although it has a very sleek and clean design. I expected it to be a bit more hipster, but I wasn’t let down. They also have an open kitchen, and despite that and the small quarters it wasn’t loud. I can’t wait to go back and try new dishes from them.
