Blu on the Avenue

On one of my last nights home, we decided to go out to eat as a family for a nice dinner. We chose Blu On the Avenue because it’s a great place to get seafood in Winter Park, and we always have a scrumptious meal. We decided to start off with oysters on the half shelf, which is one dozen‏ fresh oysters.

With the oysters, the waitress brought out oyster crackers, and a cocktail sauce with horseradish. They tasted fresh and delicious, especially with the sauce on top of them. We ended up ordering them during their happy hour for oysters, so they were reduced priced.

When we went out to eat, it was quite chilly out. I decided I wanted something to warm me up, so I went with the Blu lobster roll with a cup of lobster bisque soup. The Blu lobster roll is fresh Maine lobster meat in a buttered lobster roll with a blu pickle, and I asked for some spinach on it and had the cup of soup as a replacement for my fries. I’m normally not the biggest fan of lobster, but this sandwich was amazing. It was oozing with cheese, and had a nice contrasting flavor with the fish. The soup was creamy and the lobster in it paired perfectly with the lobster in the sandwich. It was the best tomato soup and grilled cheese pairing of my life, and my taste buds couldn’t have been happier on a cold night.

My parents both ordered the Blu steak burger, which is char-broiled broiled steak burger with aged Vermont cheddar, pickled sweet onion and tomato. It is served on a toasted Kaiser roll with a blu pickle. My dad got medium rare, with regular onions, and got fries from 310 Park South instead – it is the restaurant located next to them and they’re owned by the same people. My mom got it rare and with kale salad instead of fries. The salad consisted of chopped kale and romaine, topped with feta cheese, cucumbers, olives, diced tomatoes and shaved red onion tossed with Greek dressing. My mom has had this salad before and it’s amazing. Kale normally has a bitter flavor, but they dress it so well that it’s masked. My dad enjoyed his fries because they were crispier than the steak fries they normally serve, and my mom really liked the pickle onion on it because it wasn’t overpowering.

I decided I was craving something sweet, so I asked if I could get the chocolate cake from 310, which is a triple layer cake made with chocolate morsels and genache. Just seeing what it consisted of made my mouth water, s0 I had some high expectations. They were definitely met, and I had to fight my mom off of it because it was so tasty. It wasn’t too sweet, but definitely satisfied my sweet tooth.

As always, the service was great, and the food was delicious and worth the price. It was a nice night out with my parents, and I have no doubt we’ll go back next time I’m home.
