Community Food & Juice

I’ve recently began to notice how brands adversities themselves because I’ve been binge watching Mad Men. Before watching the show, I never paid attention to just how much a label or a name can affect a consumer’s decision on whether or not to buy from that brand.

The same goes for restaurants – the name of the establishment can really affect if you chose to dine there. When my friend invited me out to lunch at Community Food & Juice, I assumed we were going to a healthy vegan cafe and juice restaurant because of its name.

When I arrived, though, that wasn’t the case.

They serve burgers, beers and hearty eggs. I was happy.

Community Food & Juice is an American restaurant that serves “seasonal, local, organic food whenever possible,” according to their website. I was pretty pleased to hear the name of the restaurant didn’t fit the picture I had of it in my head. As much as I do love a good vegan meal, I was hungry and in need of some meat.

I opted for the salmon cucumber crudo salad. This dish came with chilled cucumber, hand sliced salmon, avocado, citrus zest and sesame-yuzu vinaigrette. It sounded delicious and I was looking forward to a nice, big salad.

What I got, though, was the opposite.

A tiny piece of salmon with some greens, cucumber and avocado added on was all I received. My friend I was eating with later told me she came to Community Food & Juice once and ordered this dish as an appetizer. I enjoyed it but it was much too small to be my meal, especially because I came in ravenous. The dish had an overall refreshing taste to it from the cucumber and citrus zest, and the creaminess from the avocado balanced against it nicely. I could have easily eaten two of these.

When sadly finished my “entree,” I watched my friend devour her large plate of eggs, wishing I had ordered more. The salmon cucumber crudo salad was good enough for me to want to try Community Food & Juice again, but it was small enough for me to learn not to order it as my entree.
