Duffy’s Sports Grill

Have you ever noticed certain locations where every business that goes in there seems to fail? There’s a popular town plaza near me, and the vast majority of businesses in there do well, except for one. I’ve seen a multitude of restaurants go in and out of that one location, and the latest one recently went in – Duffy’s Sports Grill. To my surprise, the restaurant seems to be doing well and always looks busy when I go by it. My friend, Steven, and I were walking around the area and wanted to grab a bite to eat. He told me Duffy’s is a chain and had gone to one once, and I noted that I’ve been wanting to check out the plaza’s latest installment. We decided to eat there, because it met his craving for a burger and my hankering for a salad.

Whenever I go to a sports grill or bar, I don’t usually expect them to have great salad options. While reviewing the menu, I was surprised to find a few very appealing healthier options. I decided to order the Tex-Mex taco salad with grilled chicken. The salad was fresh avocado, jack and cheddar cheese, black beans, roasted corn, pico de gallo and cilantro-onion relish, topped with sour cream. I requested for the cilantro-onion relish to be served on the side because I sometimes find the taste of cilantro to be very overwhelming. I also asked for them not to put sour cream on it.

When I initially read the menu description, it never occurred to me that my salad would be served in a taco shell. I was a bit thrown off when my salad came out in one, but figured I would make it work. I was trying to avoid so many carbohydrates, so I dumped the contents of my salad out of the shell and placed the taco shell on the side. I took a few bites of the taco to see what it tasted like, though. It was crunchy, buttery and very tasty, but I kept it out of my meal.

I tried the cilantro-onion relish and deemed it okay on the cilantro level, so I tossed it into my salad. This salad had a lot of great flavors in it, but seemed to be missing one. I added some tabasco sauce to spruce it up, but I think the problem would have been fixed had the chicken been seasoned more.  The salad could have also been made with seasoned ground beef, which may have been the tastier option. However, this salad was still quite good and I was very satisfied with it.

While eating, I took a look at what people around us were eating. Most of what everyone was eating was bar food – obviously, because it’s a sports bar – and everything looked good. I think it’s safe to say that if you’re in the mood for a good burger, this will be a good place to go. And if you’re looking for a good place to watch a game, Duffy’s also seems to be an ideal option. An Orlando City Soccer match was airing while we were there, and everyone in the restaurant seemed into the game. Although I admittedly don’t know anything about sports, Duffy’s came across as a great sports bar and place to have fun with other sports enthusiasts.

Overall, our waitress was pretty good and the food was reasonable. The interior was very clean, and had a warm yet modern sports atmosphere to it. Although this isn’t my favorite restaurant option in the town plaza, I know I can go here to get a good burger.
