The sun was glistening, the sky was a rich blue, the weather was just right – it was a perfect summer day. The annual Bethlehem Vegfest was taking place, and I went with my friend Karen for an afternoon of perfect weather and healthy food.


The Vegfest is a vegan foods festival that features food samples, food for purchase, cooking demos, a speaker presentation and shopping. Karen and I walked around for a while to check out all the different food options and shopping. There were lots of families and people with their dogs at the event, so it’s a great festival for everyone. There were even pigs you could pet, which I was surprised to see but they were adorable.


While walking around, we came across Lehigh Valley Kombucha vendor. We decided to stop there, and I was excited to try something more local than what I buy in the groceries stores. The Kombucha was pineapple ginger, and it was delicious. It had a really nice ginger flavor with a lovely hint of sweetness from the pineapple.


As we continued to walk around and scope out what we wanted for lunch, we saw a falafel vendor. The food was by Sumac Catering and Events, and they served falafel in pita and as a salad. Karen and I each ordered a falafel in pita, and it was really tasty. I love falafel, and you can never go wrong with it. They pressed their bread so it was perfectly crispy, too. Their sauce had a hint of a citrus flavor to it, which I really enjoyed because it added a new dimension of flavor.


Walking around the Vegfest with a good friend and enjoying the perfect weather was a perfect way to spend the Saturday before classes at Lehigh began. I’m sad I didn’t go to the Vegfest until my senior year, because I’d love to go back again.
